The “revealing” aspects of this piece are awesome! . #Repost @mauipublicart ・・・ Jana Ireijo: Artist in Residence at the Lāhainā Think Space As part of the Good Grief artist call, Maui Public Art Corps & the County of Maui invited artists to respond to the question of how public art can help communities hold grief, memory, and place. Jana Ireijo @vanishingmurals was selected as the artist in residence at the Lāhainā Think Space at @qkcmaui Queen Kaʻahumanu Center. Jana chose to work from a Hui Moʻolelo recording with Louis Garcia, whose story recalls catching a 92-pound ulua off Wahikuli Beach. She is transforming that moʻolelo into a large acrylic ulua that emerges within the Think Space, using a temporary evening ocean image drawn in chalk and pastel as part of the work. The piece explores memory, place, loss, and the ways stories can take physical form through public art. Jana will continue working in the Think Space through September 10, with hours posted under “schedule” at mauipublicart.org/thinkspace. Come on by! 📸 @seanmhower

We’d play in the cane fields, make hideouts in abandoned buildings, sell fish door-to-door, surf when the water got rough... My whole roots has to do with Pāʻia. — Sheldon Kealoha In 2025, Pāʻia’s Andrea Kealoha joined Maui Public Art Corps’ Hui Moʻolelo storytelling intensive led by Sissy Lake-Farm, where she recorded an intergenerational conversation with her father, Sheldon. Artist Efren Rebugio was selected through a community panel process to transform their story into a site-specific mural, developed over months of collaboration with the storytellers, cultural advisors, community members, and our team. Today, Efren is sharing that creative process with Maui Advanced Manufacturing students, demonstrating how listening, research, cultural guidance, public input, and artistic vision come together in public art.
