Maui Surprise Proposal Photographer | A Just-Engaged Love Story

There are few moments more exciting to photograph than the instant someone realizes they are about to be proposed to.

As a Maui surprise proposal photographer, I get to document that moment as it actually happens—the anticipation, the surprise, the question, the answer, and everything that follows. For this Maui proposal, we combined professional photography, video, and aerial drone footage to tell the complete story from several perspectives.

The result was more than a collection of engagement photos. We captured the proposal itself from above, beautiful portraits of the newly engaged couple, video of them celebrating and kissing, and one of my favorite parts—the happy couple announcing on camera that they just got engaged in Maui.

One of the most exciting elements of this proposal was being able to capture the moment with professional drone video.

From above, the Maui coastline becomes part of the story. The ocean, beach, and surrounding landscape provide a completely different perspective from anything we can create at ground level.

More importantly, aerial video can document the proposal while allowing the couple to remain immersed in their moment.

From the Proposal to “We Just Got Engaged!”

The proposal itself happens quickly.

However, the story doesn’t end with “yes.”

Immediately afterward comes that wonderful combination of excitement, disbelief, laughter, hugs, kisses, and the realization that you’re officially engaged.

That’s why I love continuing to photograph and film after the proposal.

For this couple, we captured romantic photographs together as well as video of them kissing and celebrating. We also recorded them happily announcing that they had just gotten engaged.

It adds something photographs alone can’t provide.

Years from now, they’ll not only be able to see what that day looked like. They’ll be able to watch themselves, hear their voices, and experience some of that excitement all over again.

Instead of forcing complicated poses, I guide couples into natural movement and interaction. Walking together, laughing, talking, embracing, and simply enjoying the moment can create photographs that feel romantic without becoming stiff or overly posed.

Maui also gives us an extraordinary natural backdrop for these portraits.

Depending on the location, we can incorporate the ocean, beach, tropical greenery, lava rock, mountains, palms, and changing evening light into the photographs.

Not every Maui location is appropriate for drone operations. Therefore, each proposal needs to be evaluated individually.

When we can use it, however, the aerial perspective can add an incredible sense of place to the story.

What Is the Best Time for a Maui Proposal?

There isn’t one perfect time for every proposal because the ideal timing depends on the location, season, weather, crowds, and the experience you’re planning.

Late afternoon and the period approaching sunset are popular because Maui’s softer evening light can be beautiful for both the proposal and the portraits afterward.

However, privacy and location can be just as important as light.

For surprise proposals, we’ll consider the complete plan rather than simply choosing a time because it’s traditionally considered the best time for photographs.
