When most people imagine a Maui couples photography session, they picture golden sand, palm trees and the Pacific Ocean.

But Maui has another side.

For this couple’s portrait session, we headed away from the coastline and into Upcountry Maui, at Kula Botanical Garden (@kula_botanical_garden) where the landscape creates a completely different feeling from the island’s famous beaches.

I love photographing Maui’s beaches. After years behind the camera here, they still provide incredible light, color and scenery.

But they aren’t the only option.

One of the advantages of photographing couples on Maui is the extraordinary variety of environments available across the island.

Upcountry changes the visual story.

Instead of relying on the ocean as the dominant background, I can work with the natural landscape, vegetation, open spaces, textures and changing light found at higher elevations along the slopes of Haleakalā.

The resulting photographs have a completely different character from a traditional Maui beach session.

What Makes Upcountry Maui Different for Photography?

Upcountry Maui offers couples a unique photography setting away from the beach, with higher-elevation landscapes, greenery, open spaces and a quieter atmosphere along the slopes of Haleakalā.

For couples searching for unique Maui photography locations, that’s an important distinction.

You can come to Hawaii and still create photographs that don’t necessarily look like traditional Hawaii vacation portraits.

That’s exactly what makes Upcountry interesting to me as a photographer.

Rather than treating the location as a generic backdrop, I look at how the landscape, available light and couple work together within the composition.

The location becomes part of the story without overwhelming the people in the photograph.

My goal isn’t to put everyone through the same sequence of poses. I provide direction when it’s helpful, but I also want to create enough space for couples to move, interact and enjoy being together.

There isn’t a “better” choice between Upcountry and the beach.

They’re simply different.

A Maui beach session can give you sand, lava rock, tropical water and beautiful sunset colors.

Upcountry can provide a more unexpected side of the island.

You prefer greenery and natural landscapes

Ultimately, I think location should complement the people being photographed rather than dictate the entire session.

Where Is Upcountry Maui?

Upcountry Maui generally refers to the communities and higher-elevation landscapes found along the slopes of Haleakalā.

This part of the island feels noticeably different from the coastal resort areas of Wailea, Kāʻanapali and Kapalua.

The elevation, vegetation, weather and scenery can all change as you travel inland and uphill.

From a photography perspective, those differences create opportunities.

Light behaves differently. Backgrounds change. Temperatures can be cooler. Clouds can move through the landscape. Even the colors can feel different from what you experience along Maui’s coastline.

Those variables are part of what makes photographing Upcountry interesting.

The Importance of Light in Upcountry Maui Photography

Location matters, but light matters even more.

I pay close attention to the direction and quality of the available light rather than choosing a location solely because it’s recognizable.

As conditions change, I can adjust where I position the couple, how much of the environment I include and whether a particular photograph should feel expansive and scenic or more intimate.

This is also why two photography sessions in the same general area can look completely different.

Maui’s weather and light are constantly changing.

Working with those conditions instead of fighting them is part of creating photographs that feel natural to the location.

Is Upcountry Maui Good for Engagement Photos?

Yes. Upcountry Maui can be an excellent location for engagement photography, anniversary portraits, honeymoon sessions and couples photography, particularly for people who want a natural setting that feels different from Maui’s beaches.

Engagement sessions work particularly well here because the landscape provides room for movement and environmental portraits.

What is the best time for an Upcountry Maui photo session?

The ideal time depends on the specific location, season, weather and type of light we’re trying to create. Late-day light can be beautiful, but Upcountry conditions can differ considerably from the coast, so I prefer planning around the actual location rather than applying one rule to every session.

Is Upcountry Maui colder than the beach?

It can be. Elevation plays a major role in Maui’s weather, and Upcountry temperatures and conditions may be noticeably different from those at sea level. It’s worth considering comfort and clothing when planning your session.

What should we wear for Upcountry Maui couples photos?

Rather than matching exactly, I recommend choosing outfits that coordinate with each other and the environment. Neutral, earthy and complementary colors can work beautifully with natural Upcountry landscapes.

Can we take engagement photos in Upcountry Maui?

Yes. Upcountry can be an excellent choice for Maui engagement photography, especially for couples who want something different from traditional beach engagement photos.

Can we combine Upcountry and beach photography?

Depending on the locations, timing and session being planned, it may be possible to incorporate different Maui environments. The logistics should be considered carefully so valuable photography time isn’t spent driving between locations.

Maui Beach Vow Renewal Photography With Family and Drone Views

A vow renewal in Maui is about more than returning to the words you once promised each other. It’s an opportunity to celebrate everything that has happened since—especially when your family is standing beside you.

For Daisy and Juan, that celebration took place on a beautiful Maui beach, surrounded by their family, the Pacific Ocean, and the natural scenery that makes Hawaii such a meaningful place to renew your vows.

I photographed their celebration from the sand while also incorporating aerial drone imagery to capture the family and Maui coastline from an entirely different perspective.

The result was a collection that wasn’t just about a couple renewing their vows. It told the story of the family their marriage has created.

A Maui Vow Renewal With the Whole Family

One of the things I love about photographing vow renewals is how different they feel from weddings.

There’s often less pressure and more freedom to simply enjoy the moment.

With family involved, I like to balance the romantic photographs of the couple with relaxed family portraits and candid moments in between. That creates a gallery that documents the vow renewal itself while also becoming an updated family portrait session in Maui.

Rather than forcing every photograph into a pose, I look for natural interaction, movement, expressions, and those brief moments that happen when everyone forgets about the camera.

Beach Photography From the Sand to the Sky

Maui’s beaches provide an incredible setting at ground level, but the perspective changes completely when you see the coastline from above.

For this session, I incorporated professional drone photography into the coverage.

Aerial imagery allows me to use the shapes of the shoreline, water, sand, and surrounding landscape as part of the composition. It also creates a sense of scale that’s difficult to communicate from the beach itself.

Combining traditional photography with aerial perspectives gives a vow renewal gallery much more visual variety while preserving the beauty of the location where the family celebrated.

Late afternoon and the period approaching sunset can provide beautiful, softer light for portraits while allowing us to transition into Maui’s warmer golden-hour colors. The ideal timing depends on the beach, season, weather, and direction of the light.

Can children be included in vow renewal photos?

Absolutely. Children often make the photographs more meaningful because the images document not only the marriage being celebrated but also the family that has grown from it.

Can drone photography be included?

Drone photography may be incorporated when weather, airspace, location rules, safety, and other operating conditions allow. As an FAA-certified drone pilot, I evaluate each location and flight individually rather than assuming a drone can be flown everywhere on Maui.

Do you photograph intimate vow renewals?

Yes. Vow renewals don’t need to be large events. An intimate ceremony with just the couple or immediate family can create some of the most personal photographs.

Recently, we had the privilege of photographing an incredible multi-generational family celebrating their grandparents’ 50th wedding anniversary on the beautiful beaches of Maui.

Thirty family members traveled together to honor five decades of love, commitment, and family. Rather than creating a traditional group portrait, we wanted to create something that reflected the significance of this extraordinary milestone.

Using FAA-certified drone photography, every family member became part of the final image by standing together in the shape of the number 50.
