When we received that message after delivering this family’s photographs, it reminded us exactly why these sessions matter.

This family had gathered on Maui to celebrate an extraordinary milestone: 25 years of marriage.

But what made the session particularly meaningful was that this wasn’t only about photographing the couple.

Their family was there with them.

Twenty-five years after saying “I do,” we had an opportunity to photograph not only their relationship but also something their marriage helped create—the people standing beside them.

Can You Combine Anniversary and Family Photography on Maui?

Yes. Combining anniversary and family photography is an excellent option when several generations are vacationing together on Maui. We can create romantic photographs of the anniversary couple while also photographing the entire family and smaller combinations during the same session.

That’s one of my favorite aspects of milestone sessions.

You aren’t forced to choose between an anniversary shoot and family portraits.

We can tell both stories.

For this family, that meant photographing the relationship that began 25 years ago alongside the family that exists today.

Maui Family Photography Is More Than a Vacation Souvenir

You can bring plenty of things home from Hawaii.

But photographs are unusual because they can actually become more valuable to you as time passes.

Five years from now, somebody looks a little different.

Ten years from now, the children have entered another stage of their lives.

Twenty years from now, the photograph becomes a record of exactly who was there, what everyone looked like and what it felt like to all be together.

That’s why I don’t think of professional family photography as simply another vacation activity.

Professional drone photography can show a family within the larger Maui landscape in a way traditional ground photography cannot. Aerial compositions can incorporate the shoreline, ocean and surrounding environment while showing the entire family together from an unexpected perspective.

One of the highlights of this particular anniversary session was creating aerial photographs and video of everyone together.

And apparently we weren’t the only ones who loved them.

The family’s message after seeing the photographs included this:

“The drone family shots are definitely in the top 10 for all of us. When the kids saw the video they loved those.”

That’s a pretty good review from the toughest critics in the family.

As an FAA-certified drone pilot, I can incorporate professional aerial photography and video when the location, airspace, weather, safety considerations and operating conditions permit.

When available, it’s a completely different perspective from anything we can create standing on the beach.

A Maui family photography session with Sean Michael Hower is guided but relaxed. Rather than expecting families to know how to pose, Sean provides direction while encouraging natural movement and interaction that creates both polished portraits and genuine candid photographs.

Not everybody loves being photographed.

That’s normal.

And when you’re working with a larger family, you’re also dealing with different personalities, ages and comfort levels.

The solution isn’t to make everyone stand rigidly and smile at the camera for an hour.

We’ll create those important everyone-looking-at-the-camera photographs, but then we’ll move.

Walk together. Talk. Laugh. Put the couples together. Photograph the siblings. Give people something to do instead of constantly asking them to “pose.”

That’s often when personalities start appearing.

And those are frequently the photographs families love most.
